SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Senior Engineer Technician is responsible for performing structural inspections of bridges and waterfront structures, including planning, preparing, and executing field inspections and investigations and assisting with the preparation of engineering reports. This role operates under the guidance of a Project Engineer or higher-level engineer who assigns tasks, provides direction, and reviews work to ensure it meets the required standards and practices of civil engineering.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review, understand, and utilize engineering plans, reports, studies, and related documents. 
• Conduct thorough structural inspections of bridges and waterfront structures to assess their condition, identify potential issues, and recommend necessary repairs or maintenance. 
• Utilize advanced inspection techniques and tools, including non-destructive testing methods, to accurately evaluate the integrity and safety of structures. 
• Prepare detailed inspection reports, studies, and related documents, including photographs, diagrams, and written documentation, to communicate findings and recommendations to clients and project managers. 
• Assist in the planning and execution of inspection projects, including coordinating site access, equipment, and personnel. 
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other team members to execute inspection tasks and projects effectively. 
• Stay current with industry developments, technological advancements, and regulatory changes related to structural inspections and marine engineering. 
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior technicians and other team members to support their professional growth and development. 
• Apply knowledge of construction and structural inspection basics, including concrete, steel, carpentry, welding, and fabricating.

YOU WILL NEED

• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in the English language.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively. 
• Motivation, a strong work ethic, and the ability to be a self-starter. 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 
• Willingness to travel to various inspection sites as required. 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma 
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in structural inspections or related activities. 
• Commercial dive school certificate, US Navy dive training certificate, or ADCI dive certification card. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Proficiency in basic mathematics and technical writing
• A strong understanding of structural engineering principles, materials, and construction methods
• Skilled in generating clear and concise reports
• Proficiency in the use of inspection tools and equipment, including non-destructive testing methods
• Completion of the National Highway Institute Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course (FHWA-NHI-130055)
• 10hr OSHA General Construction Course
• Current Blood Borne Pathogens, First Aid, CPR, DAN O2 Administration certifications
• Valid Driver's License 
• Current ADCI "Fit to Dive" physical 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or ocean engineering from an accredited four-year university  
• Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) proficiency  
• Bridge Management System (BMS) proficiency in state of hire  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT & SAFETY

The duties of this position require the employee to regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. This position may require the employee to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While in the field, the employee may be required to walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather conditions, and stand up to eight hours or more at a time. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the required duties of this position. 

This position requires maintaining current industry knowledge and expertise through active involvement in professional organizations and/or other activities that may require additional and/or flexible working hours. The ability and availability to readily work overtime and perform duties outside of normal working hours may be required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. Travel inside and outside of the continental U.S. may be required.

COMPENSATION

The hourly pay range for positions in Maryland is $33 to $40 an hour, depending on education and relevant experience.
